DR. NIK ROSKIMAN ABDUL SAMAD was born in Kelantan, Malaysia, on 27 March 1968. With effective from April 2, 2018, he serves as a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Shari’ah, Law & Politics at Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM), after serving almost 8-years as the Director of Media Centre there. IKIM is an agency under the purview of Prime Minister’s Office. Prior to that, he was appointed as the Radio IKIMfm Director on April 5, 2010. When IKIMfm and TV IKIM Division were merged on February 22, 2012, Roskiman was entrusted as the Director of Media Centre IKIM. Prior to joining the media centre, he was a fellow at the IKIM Centre for Training and Consultancy (PPLI) which provided workshops and training. He used to be a lecturer at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) prior to joining IKIM. Roskiman served as Senior Assistant Registrar of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) Malaysia under the leadership of the eminent scholar, Tan Sri Prof. Dr. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-‐Attas. After graduating from IIUM with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1994, he embarked on his Master’s at ISTAC and successfully completed his M.A. in 2000. Sometime in 1997, Roskiman left for Sudan to enhance his mastery of Arabic Language at the Centre of Arabic Studies, International University of Africa, Khartoum. In 2004, he was sent to further his studies at the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom, until 2008. There, he was under the supervision of renowned Orientalist in the History of Malaya and Southeast Asia, Professor Dr. William Roff (d.2013); as well as Professor Dr. Carole Hillenbrand and later Dr. Ayman Shihadeh. However, he obtained his doctoral degree (Ph.D.) from the Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur with a dissertation entitled “Some Aspects of Spiritual Thoughts of Shaykh ‘Abd Al-Samad Al-Falimbani (d. 1243/1828)“. The thesis was supervised by Associate Prof. Dr. Wan Suhaimi Wan Abdullah.
His M.A. thesis, which he completed under the supervision of a Turkish historian, Professor Dr. Mehmet Ipşirli, was selected for publication by ISTAC-IIUM as a book titled, The Administrative Ethics of Al-Ghazzālī with Reference to His Naṣīhat al-Mulūk. Roskiman regularly contributes his writings to the press and magazines as well as appears on IKIM Radio Station. He used to have a monthly column in the Q&A magazine published by Galeri Ilmu Sdn. Bhd, before the magazine was discontinued. His specialisation is in Islamic Mysticism (Sufism), Ethics, and Good Governance while his area of interest now includes Media & Broadcasting.
