Political Tsunami

My beloved Professor and mentor e-mailed a few days ago telling me about the 'political tsunami' in Malaysia. Though we here have not been hit by the 'tsunami', nonetheless, we followed the development from afar. Shocked as well as excited, for some. For the first time in the 50 year history of Malaysia, the Malaysians decided to try another pact of political parties to rule the country, at least in the five states, while an increase in the Parliamentary members.

Feel proud to see some of old friends being an MP or ADUN now, with the dearest one as an EXCO. I always asked my friends who are active in political movement and claim that their struggle is to uphold the banner of Islam this simple question: tell me who in the history of the pious Caliph al-Rashidin, anyone of them that became richer when they were the Caliph compared to when they were not holding the office? None.

This means a lot. So if you want to be a truly Muslim politician and leader of the ummah, then be prepared to forego your wealth as did Abu Bakar and others. Don't start thinking of building your own empire now.

Otherwise, step down and be a businessman. You can be rich as a businessman but not as a politician. I am sick of politicians using the position and influence to accumulate their personal wealth and their families.
