Clamouring for Justice, but which one?

Dr. Nik Roskiman Abdul Samad[1]

Clamouring for justice perhaps has become the norm of the day. From East to West, people demand justice from their respective governments which have admitted to giving their best to restore justice or to put it in place. But what is the real meaning of “justice”? Are we, and the governments, talking about the same justice, in all its form and functions? Or, perhaps, the form of justice from the perspective of the government differs from that of the peoples’? So, in all honesty, are both even online when it comes to justice? As nothing will come out of it if either one is offline.

Some think justice means purely “equality”.  Justice has never been to mean equality from the religious, cultural or philosophical viewpoints since the primordial days. It is wrongly taken to mean equality to those who feel they have not been treated justly for some reasons either due to gender, race, sets of behaviour or such like. The “unequal treatment” they have been receiving has undoubtedly led to the struggle for the emancipation of women, as known in terms of the “feminism” groups today which clamour for “equal” rights between men … Read the rest “Clamouring for Justice, but which one?”

MUHASABAH KEPENTINGAN MASA

Muhasabah Kepentingan Masa

Bukhari no. 6325).

  • Ketika

A Mercy to the Worlds

Ever since the new government came into power shortly after the 14th General Election, the oft-repeated phrase used in promoting Islam in the country has been “Islam is a Mercy to the Worlds”. The phrase is actually part of verse 107 of the Holy Qur’an in Surah al-Anbiya’, in which God declares to Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) “And We have not sent you, (O Muhammad), except as a mercy to the worlds”. Indeed, the far-reaching significance of verse 107 will try to be analysed syntactically with the support of several renowned Qur’anic commentaries or exegesis so as to fully grasp its meaning.

First of all, it says “…We have not sent you (O Muhammad) except…” is in itself a recognition that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is neither a self-proclaimed Prophet nor Messenger of God, but rather one appointed and chosen by the Creator of the Universe. The proclamation is necessary in order to build confidence and trust of the masses that the man by the name of “Muhammad” (pbuh) is a true Prophet and Messenger of God. More importantly, the proclamation simultaneously invalidate any other false and fake prophets should any existed. Such a validation is … Read the rest “A Mercy to the Worlds”

Pemikiran Generasi Muda Terkesan Teruk Dengan Media

Read the rest “Pemikiran Generasi Muda Terkesan Teruk Dengan Media”

FAKE NEWS & LACK OF FAITH

The recently-passed 2018 Anti-Fake News Act 803 has been criticised left, right and centre. Many have claimed it would not only restrict the citizens’ rights to freedom of speech, but worse, it has been said to stifle freedom of thinking. This is because the punishment meted out upon conviction is a fine not exceeding five hundred thousand ringgit or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six years or to both is said to be draconian in nature. People would be subjected to psychological censorship for fear of harsh repercussions just for sharing information.

Yet, in essence, the Act was passed as a result of rampant unverified and false news and information circulated and forwarded by public communities at large. According to the Act, “fake news” includes “any news, information, data and reports, which is or are wholly or partly false, whether in the form of features, visuals or audio recordings or in any other form capable of suggesting words or ideas”.

As the term denotes, “fake news” is devoid of truth from its reality. It is an invention, creation, manipulation from non-existence into news, information or data which do not correspond to the truth on the ground and reality. Fake … Read the rest “FAKE NEWS & LACK OF FAITH”

BOOK REVIEW: THE EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICE OF SYED MUHAMMAD NAQUIB AL‑ATTAS

Ed. John L. Esposito, Reviewed by Maryam Jameelah

Wan Mohd Nor Wan Daud, The Educational Philosophy and Practice of Syed Muhammad Naquib Al‑Attas, ISTAC, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The currency of modern educational ideas in the Islamic lands is a historical testimony to the epical failure of the Muslims over the past two hundred years, and practices are the slow, but inexorable, unraveling of the Muslim mind. Education in the contemporary world is like the most pervasive ‘conveyor belt’ transmitting the ideas of the dominant culture and the values system of politico‑economic elite to the credulous and dominated generations. Education in the true Foucaldian sense is plugged into the grid of reigning ideas and values, not necessarily predicated on ‘truth’. It is also a master technology of control, which leaves nothing untouched. The content of modern education and the whole process of schooling/disciplining are aimed at ‘manufacturing’ human beings to fulfil certain political and socio-economic objectives set by the political powers that be. The individual and the needs of his self are absent from the whole project of modern education. The Muslim case was aggravated by our home grown ‘epistemological lackeys’ who, in their effort to ingratiate the colonial masters, messed

Imam al-Ghazali & Ilmu Hadith

“Al-Ghazali adalah syaikh (mulia), panutan, ilmunya bak lautan, hujjatul Islam, seseorang yang mengagumkan zaman, hiasan agama, Abu Hamid, pemilik banyak karya cipta dan kecerdasan yang luar biasa”

3. Al-Hafizh Abdul Ghafir, dikutip Imam Tajuddin as-Subki dalam Thabaqat asy-Syafi’iyyah (VI/204), berkata:

Read the rest “Imam al-Ghazali & Ilmu Hadith”
